Additionally, one of the volunteers came out with the proposition of creating a Community Bulletin Board.
Two projects were brought into discussion at the steering committee meeting: possibility of creating a Walkway to the Yarker Falls and the installation of the Yarker Bell and the Grist Stone.
If you would like to help, either by suggesting the suitable areas to survey, or by participating as a volunteer, please contact us at: yarker.community@gmail.com.
The name for Yarker community association
There is a proposition to name it Yarker and District Community Association. The volunteers, who were active in Yarker until early 1990's, were acting under this name and if we wish to continue their great work it would be perhaps a good idea to inherit the name as well.
Please contact us if you would like to express your opinion in this matter or if you have propositions how to name the Yarker community association.

Carolyn Pickering:- Interested in developing and promoting the History of Yarker through website and specific installations throughout the community.
Eric Depoe :- the promotion of both the arts and sports
Richard Ryde:- documentation and sharing of heritage of the village
Sharon Westendorp:- restoration of community spirit. In times of crisis village shows a great deal of community spirit. We need leadership to help use this spirit in a positive way at other times. Also interested in landscaping of the area to visually improve the appearance of the village.
Wayne Goodyer :- focus on the Napanee River (Habitat Education). Find ways to try and promote the village. Find ways to re-orienate people to the community. Many people have little or no interaction with the village itself.
Rob Renaud:- as a recreational triathelete he hopes to promote fitness in the Village and surrounding areas. Presently promotes fitness in Kingston
Debbie Richmond:- as a long time resident would like to continue to highlight the village and its history through the development of projects such as a walkway to the Falls and installation of the Yarker Bell and the Grist stone.
Group discussion about the mandate for this organization. Richard Ryde suggested this could be divided into three areas. Social/Historic/Recreational. He cautioned the group not to be too ambitious. Which geographic area do we include? As Yarker and District Community Association it would include more interested people especially in areas like Colebrook. Wayne Goodyer also suggested we align ourselves with already existing groups such as the United and Methodist churches and the Yarker Family school.
Need to put an executive in place as soon as possible the steering committee was identified as an interim measure. Would roll over the steering committee into the executive as soon as possible into a charitable organization. Anna Szczepaniec is researching this.
How do we serve the community? Group suggested a Survey of all residents . How to structure the Survey was discussed. Wayne Goodyer agreed to research an effective method of surveying the community and report back at the next meeting. The group agreed to consider suitable areas to survey and report back to group at the next meeting.
Anna Szczepaniec discussed the role of the Blog in communicating and sharing ideas. Some members although interested in knowing about the Blog preferred personal contact with meetings.

However what made Yarker special and dynamic manufacturing centre was the entrepreneurship of men like Joseph Connelly and E.W. Benjamin. Benjamin in particular invested and speculated in a number of business ventures such as the production of carriage wheels. From the turn of the century until 1916 it was regarded as one of the largest in Canada employing about 60 people.
In 1916 Sam McLaughlin, of General Motors, Oshawa, one of the early pioneers of car manufacturing offered Benjamin the business of making automobile wheels for his company. For once, Benjamin’s foresight failed him and he turned down the offer considering it too risky! Shortly afterwards the carriage business died and with it the boom years of Yarker.
The site where all the mills stood can still be seen but their remains are hardly visible. In a short space of time the Falls have returned to nature- a place of beauty and of archaeological significance with respect to Ontario’s early industrial past.
Steering Committee Meeting on October 28th, 2009
We will discuss areas of interest and possible projects for the organization, as well as begin the discussion of formal incorporation of the Yarker Community Association into a non-for-profit organization. The minutes of the meeting will be sent by e-mail to all volunteers and published here.
First Meeting of Yarker Community Association
First meeting of the Yarker Community Association took place on October 15th in the Waterfall Tearoom in Yarker.
The initiators if the meeting were very happy to greet over 40 participants. Andrzej Maciejewski prepared a slide-show of historical photographs of Yarker and David Pickering gave a lecture about Yarker history and heritage. The photographs used for the slide-show came from private collections of Eric DePoe and David Pickering.
We gathered the information about volunteers who would like to commit their time and effort to our community and about areas of interest and possible projects for the Yarker Community Association. So far we know that inhabitants of Yarker are interested in improvement and new projects in following areas: Heritage (documenting and profiling the history of the village), Sports and Recreation, Activities for children and teens, Arts (music, film, visual arts, photography), Community events and festivals, Ecology (Friends of Napanee River) and Beautification of the village. Please contact us, by e-mail at yarker.community@gmail.com or by leaving a comment under this post, if you would like to add something to this list or if you have some ideas for the projects beneficial for our community. If you would like to be added to the volunteers list, please e-mail us.
